Bio

Penrose Way is an emerging instrumental prog rock quartet from Northern Queensland, creating expressive, melodic heavy music outside of Australia’s major scenes.

Drawing inspiration from contemporaries of Plini and Madeon, Penrose Way weaves clever melodies with soaring atmospheres while balancing technical proficiency with musical storytelling. The compositions move fluidly between statement riffs, polymeters and melodic peaks which deliver an expansive and deeply personal soundscape.

The project’s origins trace back to school holidays in rural Abergowrie, where childhood best friends Jacob Curro (lead composer/guitarist) and Alex Leotta (drummer) spent countless hours in the Curro family’s purpose-built “music shed” which was designed to keep the noise away from the house. Fitted out with a rusty old caravan, it became their retreat—somewhere the duo would obsess over their craft well into the early hours, every break.

Fast forward 20 years, a contemporary music degree and a promising solo project (Stargazer EP) by Jacob, persuasive words to Alex and the discovery of funk bass player Damien King and metal head rhythm guitarist Kyle Kaine, Penrose Way was born. All in the unlikely place of Townsville.

What followed was the debut release of Jake’s EP brainchild, Stargazer (2022) * which earned Triple J airplay and an early wave of Spotify support. Since then, the band has continued to evolve with upcoming releases promising a broader emotional palette and a refined signature sound that invites both long-time prog fans and new listeners alike.

Not to be discouraged by location, Penrose Way’s live show is set to tour multiple states in 2026 and are a highlight in their own right. Performances are marked by infectious energy, captivating visuals, and an ever-shifting dynamic intensity. Whether you’re drawn in by the technicality or swept away by the emotion, each performance offers a powerful and memorable experience.
